Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) – Work in Canada After Your Studies

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows eligible international graduates of Canadian colleges and universities to gain valuable Canadian work experience after completing their studies. This open work permit enables graduates to work for almost any employer in Canada and is widely recognized as one of the strongest pathways to permanent residence.

PGWP holders can build their careers, gain skilled work experience, and strengthen their eligibility for immigration programs such as Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs.

What Is a Post-Graduation Work Permit?

The PGWP is an open work permit issued to international students who have successfully completed an eligible post-secondary program at a recognized Canadian institution. Unlike employer-specific permits, the PGWP allows graduates to work for any employer, in any location in Canada.

The permit is issued only once in a lifetime and is time-limited.

Who Can Apply?

The PGWP is suitable for graduates who:

  • Completed an eligible program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

  • Studied full-time in Canada (with limited exceptions)

  • Maintained valid student status during their studies

  • Applied within the required timeframe after graduation

  • Meet all immigration admissibility requirements

Eligibility depends on the program length, institution, and compliance with study permit conditions.

PGWP Duration

The length of a PGWP depends on the duration of the completed study program:

  • Programs between 8 months and under 2 years may qualify for a PGWP of the same length

  • Programs of 2 years or more may qualify for a PGWP of up to 3 years

  • Certain combined programs may also qualify for longer permits

The work permit cannot be extended beyond the maximum eligibility period.

Pathway to Permanent Residence

Canadian work experience gained under a PGWP can significantly improve eligibility for permanent residence programs, including:

  • Express Entry

  • Canadian Experience Class

  • Provincial Nominee Programs

Many graduates use the PGWP as a bridge from international student status to permanent residency in Canada.

Work Opportunities Under PGWP

PGWP holders can:

  • Work full-time for any employer

  • Gain skilled or professional work experience

  • Change employers without applying for a new permit

  • Work in multiple positions or industries

This flexibility allows graduates to explore career options and gain experience relevant to long-term goals.
